Young woman benefiting from nitrous oxide sedationBrushing and flossing aren’t enough to keep your teeth and gums healthy. The American Dental Association recommends a cleaning and checkup every 6 months. However, 22% of adults delay dental care because they are concerned about pain. Whether your palms sweat when you walk into the office or you need dental work, you may be a candidate for nitrous oxide sedation.

What is Nitrous Oxide?

You might have heard nitrous oxide referred to as “laughing gas.” It’s a common dental sedative that’s safe for both children and adults. The odorless gas is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a mask placed over the nose.

As you inhale slowly, the effects of the sedative will take effect, allowing your anxiety to fade away. Your arms and legs may feel heavy or tingle as you reach a deep level of relaxation. You may even doze off, but nitrous oxide doesn’t “put you to sleep.”

This allows your dentist to perform any dental work quickly while you remain comfortable and relaxed. Once your treatment is finished, the nitrous is turned off and you’ll remain on oxygen for a few more minutes until the effects dissipate. You won’t have to worry about any lingering side effects or grogginess. You can even drive yourself home from your appointment.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxides Sedation

Nitrous oxide has been used for generations to help patients relax in the dentist’s chair. It provides a variety of benefits, including:

  • Safe for most patients.
  • Effective in reducing dental-related fears and phobias.
  • Takes effect quickly.
  • Wears off quickly with no side effects.
  • Allows your dentist to perform dental treatments quickly.
  • Relieves neck, back, and jaw pain while at the dentist.
  • Reduces a strong gag reflex.

Who is a Candidate for Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide is the safest dental sedative; however, you’ll require a consultation with your dentist to ensure it’s right for you. They’ll learn more about your medical history and review any prescribed or OTC medications to look for any risk factors. Some patients with certain conditions can experience complications, like pregnancy or emphysema. Based on the results of your consultation, your dentist will determine if nitrous oxide can help you achieve your best smile.

If you’ve been putting off seeing your dentist because of anxiety or a complex treatment plan, nitrous oxide can be the answer to your problem. You can enjoy your time at the dentist with no worry about the sights, smells, or sounds of the office. You’ll remain comfortable and relaxed while getting the care you need to ensure your smile stays healthy and beautiful for a lifetime.
