Are Teething Rings Safe?

Baby chewing on teething ringNothing is more exciting than seeing your little one’s first baby tooth poke through their gums. However, it can mean many sleepless nights, fussiness, and tears waiting for it to emerge. Teething rings are a go-to solution to soothe gummy smiles, but are they safe? Many teething items are recommended by pediatric dentists, but some can be harmful. Here’s how to choose the best one for your bundle of joy.

Benefits of Teething Rings

Signs of teething can be very obvious. Besides tender or swollen gums, your baby can be irritable, drool, or bite on hard objects. Some infants will refuse food or have difficulty sleeping. A teething toy can help soothe sore gums. They are perfectly designed for tiny hands to put pressure on tender areas.

Many teething rings on the market are perfectly safe, but others may have certain risks. Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing the best item for your child:

  • Keep It Cool: A cool teething device can reduce inflammation and numb their gums, but it shouldn’t be too cold. Frozen or cold teething aids can bruise your little one’s delicate gums. It’s better to put their teething rings in the refrigerator instead of the freezer.
  • Supervise Your Child: Always watch over your infant when they have a teething ring. Never attach it to their neck or clothing because it can cause choking or strangulation.
  • Choose the Right Materials: Teething rings can be made of various materials, like plastic or silicone. Some are even filled with liquids. Although they are popular, liquid-filled teething rings can be punctured by teeth, causing them to leak into your child’s mouth. Some plastic teething rings can break or fracture, which can be a choking hazard or injure their gums. Look for items that don’t have small parts attached to them. Choose durable materials that won’t break.

Easing Teething Discomfort

Besides having plenty of teething rings on hand to soothe your little one, you can also manage their discomfort using a few tips:

  • Use a cold washcloth to gently rub their gums. Wash the cloth after every use.
  • If your child is eating solids, encourage foods that are soft and cold, like applesauce.
  • Offer a bottle filled with only water.

After their tooth erupts, it’s time to schedule a consultation with a pediatric dentist. Early dental care is essential for your child’s oral health and development. They’ll have the foundation they need for a lifelong commitment to their dental health.
