Learn How Down Syndrome Can Impact Your Child’s Dental Health

Children with Down syndrome are bright, joyful individuals who often require specialized healthcare, including dental care tailored to their unique needs. Because Down syndrome can affect how teeth and jaws develop, it may contribute to certain oral health challenges.

If you have a child with Down syndrome, knowing what to watch for—and how to help—can make a big difference in keeping their smile healthy and strong.

Common Dental Issues in Children with Down Syndrome

Delayed Tooth Eruption
Children with Down syndrome often experience delays in the eruption of both baby and permanent teeth. This means teeth may appear later than average, and they might emerge in an unusual order.

Smaller or Misshapen Teeth
Teeth may be smaller than typical or have irregular shapes, which can lead to gaps or crowding. These differences can sometimes affect chewing or speech development.

Bite Problems
Because the upper jaw may be smaller or underdeveloped, children with Down syndrome often have bite issues, such as an open bite or crossbite. These conditions can contribute to uneven wear on the teeth and make chewing more challenging.

Increased Risk of Gum Disease
People with Down syndrome are at higher risk for developing periodontal (gum) disease, sometimes at an earlier age. This is partly due to differences in immune response and oral anatomy, including larger tongues and small mouths that can make thorough cleaning more difficult.

Dry Mouth and Tooth Decay
Certain medications, mouth breathing, or anatomical factors may contribute to dry mouth. When saliva flow is reduced, it increases the risk of cavities.

Tips for Supporting Good Oral Health

Caring for your child’s smile starts with early, consistent dental visits and good habits at home. Here are some helpful tips:

  • Start dental visits early. Your child should see a pediatric dentist by their first birthday or when the first tooth erupts.
  • Brush twice a day and floss daily. Use a soft-bristled brush, and ask your dentist for guidance on techniques that work best for your child’s unique needs.
  • Watch for signs of gum inflammation. If you notice redness, swelling, or bleeding, schedule a dental checkup promptly.
  • Consider fluoride treatments. Fluoride can help strengthen enamel and protect against decay. Your dentist may recommend in-office fluoride applications or a prescription toothpaste.
  • Work with a dentist experienced in special needs care. A dental team that understands the specific needs of children with Down syndrome can provide personalized strategies for care.

With the right support, children with Down syndrome can enjoy healthy, happy smiles for life.
